what is the biggest challenge or opportunity you’ve faced and how did it shape who you are?

i quit my job do to racial intolerance of a co-worker. i won’t mention the company name out of respect, but i made the decision that it was not a place that i could work.

if there’s anything i’m known for, it’s being able to get along with other people and having a positive attitude and sweet nature. in fact, i was voted by my co-workers for having the best service with a smile.

while i am a nice person, i knew in this situation that i had to stand up for myself. comments went too far involving my skin color and they did not leave me feeling great. some people laughed it off, but I did not. i’m not one to speak up, but i made it clear that the comments were not okay. looking back on the situation, i am proud for making my feelings known.

after some time and confiding in loved ones, i came to a decision that it was a good time to leave my job. i met with management and was asked to stay in exchange for a co-worker being suspended, but i still felt that i was in the wrong environment. i still keep in touch with some of my old co-workers and feel that i am missed. the first weeks after leaving the company had me feeling defeated, but i was extremely proud of standing up for myself.

no one should have to fight for respect and decency. this situation will remain a learning experience for me. but, on the bright side, i just started a new full-time job and couldn’t be happier with the decision.

what’s one word, thought, or philosophy that you live by?

i live don’t live life by a clock or a timeline. i am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason when it’s supposed to happen. everyone’s journey is unique and there is no need to compare ourselves to others.
